Basic Anatony
Oral- The side of the body that contains the mouth. (Barnes et. all 2004)
Aboral- The exumbrella or outside of the bell. Opposite the mouth. (Barnes et. all 2004) Bell- The body of the Jellyfish; in the shape of the bowl. (Barnes et. all 2004) Manubrium- A long tubular process that hangs into the subumbrellar space below the bell. At the tip we find the mouth. (Barnes et. all 2004) Stomach- The digestive region of the coelenteron. Extracellular digestion occurs here. (Barnes et. all 2004) Radial Canals- 4 radial canals extend from the stomach into the bell margin. (Barnes et. all 2004) Gonad- Sexual reproductive organs, may be found on the manubrium or on the radial canals. (Barnes et. all 2004) Velum- Is a thin circumferential shelf of tissue that encircles the subumbrellar cavity. It's also a defining characteristic in hydromedusae. (Barnes et. all 2004) Tentacles- Arise from the outer margin are used in attaching to sea grasses and weeds. Also used to capture prey. (Barnes et. all 2004) |
